Lake Elsinore side: SR-74 Lane Widening Safety Project
- Caltrans District 8
- $96.1 million
- West of Monte Vista St. to Grand Ave.
Caltrans is widening lanes and shoulders and adding safety features on Ortega Highway from just west of Monte Vista Street to Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore. The work requires nightly flagging with lane closures and day work as needed, and weekend work may require extended closures, including 55-hour full closures.
- Weeknights: flagging operations from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. between Monte Vista Street (west of El Cariso Campground Road) and Grand Avenue, with nightly full closures as needed because of the narrow road and limited shoulders.
- 55-hour weekend closures: held Aug. 28–31 and Sept. 18–21, 2026, from Friday 9 p.m. to Monday 4 a.m., between South Main Divide and Grand Avenue. During these, Caltrans allowed resident access only, by pilot car, with no through access between Orange County and Lake Elsinore.

Effects in the national forest
The Forest Service says weekend Caltrans closures limit access to South Main Divide Road and parts of the Trabuco Ranger District, and it lists Blue Jay Campground as temporarily closed, citing the widening work and nightly closures.

San Juan Capistrano side: Lower Ortega Highway Gap Closure
- Caltrans District 12
- Calle Entradero to Reata Road
- Sponsors: County of Orange & OCTA
This project will widen SR-74 from two lanes to four from Calle Entradero to just east of the city/county line, with restriping to Reata Road. It adds a 12-foot lane in each direction, a painted median on the western part, and paved shoulders with striped bike lanes. Caltrans says this stretch is heavily congested in the morning and evening peak hours.
Caltrans expects construction to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. In October 2026, OCTA approved more funding and said it hopes to start in January 2027, with completion expected in early 2029.
